Oxaliplatin acts by blocking DNA synthesis through inhibition of topoisomerase II enzyme and therefore preventing cell division or growth. As a result, it can cause cell death or shrinkage.

Uses:
Oxaliplatin is a chemotherapeutic, which is used to treat colorectal cancer. It can be administered either intravenously or orally via mouth and rectum. Oxaliplatin has a broad range of activity against solid tumors, including leukemias and lymphomas.
Oxaliplatin was approved by the FDA in 2002 for the treatment of advanced (metastatic) non-small cell lung cancer that has not responded to other treatments such as cisplatin or carboplatin; however, it does not produce complete remission rates like those seen with other drugs like irinotecan/fluorouracil combination therapy (FC).
Dosage:
Oxaliplatin dosage is determined by age, weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. In most cases, it is given intravenously as a solution in saline at a rate of 1 mg/ml or less per day in divided doses. The majority of patients who receive oxaliplatin do so with other medications such as 5-FU or capecitabine.
Oxaliplatin can be used together with other cancer therapies such as paclitaxel (Taxol) or irinotecan (Camptosar). It is also used in combination with radiation therapy for certain cancers.
In adults, the starting dose is 85 mg/m2 as a 2-hour infusion. This is the same for children and the elderly. It is also the same for all other populations.
