What is the definition of exercise?

In our article on physical activity and open crotch exercise, Trinity College Dublin discusses various definitions of physical activity. Caspersen et al. proposed in 1985 that physical activity is “any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscle and resulting in energy expenditure”.

However, in 2011, the American College of Sports Medicine added something to this definition. They said physical activity is “any physical movement produced by skeletal muscle that results in energy expenditure in excess of resting levels.” This updated definition is more accurate because we’re constantly using energy, even when we’re not physically active.

The terms “exercise” and “physical activity” are often used interchangeably, but there is actually a difference. Exercise is actually a subset of physical activity that we have already defined. In other words, all exercise is a type of physical activity, but not all physical activity is exercise.

The main characteristics of exercises are that they are planned, structured and repetitive. It is also usually performed to improve or maintain levels of health or fitness. For example, going to a grocery store may be physical activity, but not necessarily physical activity since the purpose of the trip is not related to health.

What is the definition of wellbeing?

Wellness is a term we’ve all heard a lot about, but it’s pretty broad. To better understand what we mean when we talk about well-being, we have put together some definitions.

In our Open-Step definition of well-being, developed by Coventry University, we present the definition of Dodge et al. Who stated: “Sustainable well-being is when individuals possess the mental, social, and physical needs for a specific psychological, social, and/or physical challenge. When individuals have more challenges than resources, momentum diminishes with their well-being and vice versa.”

Here we see the difference between our physical, social and mental health, which in turn contributes to our overall well-being. He suggested that the five core elements of well-being are positive emotions, engagement, relationships, purpose, and success.
